    What.

    Responsible Tourism Project

Project Authentic is a community tourism initiative rooted in the values of responsible tourism, which seeks to mitigate negative social and environmental impacts of tourism while preserving the local culture. The project is primarily implemented in partnership with Cooperative La Voz, an coffee cooperative in San Juan la Laguna, but also incorporates other organizations, networks, cooperatives, etc. along the way.

    Who.

    Cooperative La Voz

Project Authentic seeks to expand the authentic tourism opportunities available for groups of travelers at Lake Atitlán, ensuring that the 162 families that make up Cooperative La Voz play a key role in facilitating activities over the course of the Immersion Trip. We have chosen to partner with La Voz because of their rich history of positively impacting the community of San Juan la Laguna. For 40 years, La Voz has been empowering small-scale producers and currently seeks to use tourism as a vehicle for continuing that empowerment.

    How.

    Immersion Trips

Immersion Trips are how we implement Responsible Tourism values and directly involve the families of Cooperative La Voz. In doing so, we create an multi-day agenda packed with activities that allow visitors to learn, interact, and immerse themselves in the local Maya Tz'utujil culture, connecting with the receiving community in affirming and responsible ways.

    Where.

    Lake Atitlán

San Juan la Laguna, a town on the shores of Lake Atitlán, serves as the base for Immersion Trips because this is where our primary partner, Cooperative La Voz, is located. Throughout the course of the trip, we incorporate visits to other lakeside communities as well as offer groups the opportunity to travel to other regions within Guatemala via our Custom Immersion Trip option.

    When.

    All Year Long!

We run Immersion Trips throughout the entire year. We start booking trips as early as you start planning, whether that is one year or one month in advance. Please note that we operate on a first come, first served basis. If your trip is a little more last minute, that's okay, we may be able to host your group! Please Contact Us to make an inquiry or email us directly at info@atguatemala.org.
